The AI Test Results are in …

Beware of AI.

I get asked all the time to evaluate and review AI. These systems range from simulated ATS programs to outreach multipliers to resume writing.

I’ve discovered through this testing that my job is not at all in jeopardy to AI. I’ve found across the board that none of them work as well as I do. There are hiring experts and there are tech people without any hiring experience both touting their systems on LinkedIn and other social media. They claim that their AI is the best and will solve some or all of your job search problems. I've tested them and found that they cause as many problems as they solve.

AI can be awesome for creating initial drafts and possibly generating ideas for the job search. But the information AI produces is still only about 50% correct and sometimes AI “hallucinates” and makes things up. Ask ChatGPT “How does an ATS work?” and the answer is 100% wrong.

I know that you feel stressed. If you haven’t ventured out yet to look for a new job, you’ve certainly read about how difficult the job market it now. Maybe your colleagues around you have been laid off. Or maybe you’ve been searching for a while and you’ve gotten rejection after rejection after rejection. Whatever your status you might feel that the job search is daunting, and you might then conclude that AI is your answer and could be your next best friend. Everyone else is using AI, right? You think that AI saves you time and money and makes everything easier.

It doesn’t.

Did you know:

  • 80% of hiring managers dislike seeing AI-generated CVs and cover letters.

  • 74% say they can spot when AI has been used in a job application.

  • More than half (57%) aresignificantly less likely to hire an applicant who has used AI and may even dismiss the application instantly if they recognize it is AI-generated.

  • Hiring managers prefer authentic, human-written applications because AI-generated ones often sound repetitive and generic and imply the applicant is lazy.

I learned of one techie who created a resume-to-job matching program that he knows doesn’t work, and yet he has been selling it to people anyway. People feel desperate.

I love Claude. Claude is my go-to AI. But I know there are limits to its use. I use it personally to generate ideas and maybe create a first draft for my own written materials. At Control Your Career I use Claude to make strategic job search plans for my clients. We also use two different AI systems to make targeted lists of contacts and a Hot List of companies that are hiring.

But I absolutely do not take AI as the final word. I recently tested out Claude to re-write a client’s resume. I gave very specific detailed commands as to what I wanted. As expected, Claude solved a lot of the resume problems and created a whole lot of new problems that I had to fix. These fixes included rewriting AI slop.

Please be wary of using AI. The human element is missing in these systems and that is crucial to your success.
